Whether you’re auditioning on tape in Toronto or going down to L.A. for pilot season, auditioning for an American television comedy is different than its Canadian counterpart. Learn more about what the networks, producers and casting directors are looking for, and how to make acting choices that respect the writers yet make you stand out. This is a hands-on workshop in which actors will work scenes from current U.S. comedy casting breakdowns. Scenes will be assigned to participants in advance of the workshop.
You will learn techniques to:
- Nail the jokes
- Analyze a scene for comedy
- Surprise the director (in a good way)
- Get the tone and pacing right
- Create characters that stand out
- Heighten the stakes without being over the top
You will also learn the differences between: Multi vs. single camera sit-coms, cable vs. network, co-star vs. guest star vs. recurring role, multi-camera vs. single camera and more.

“Wow! Totally brilliant and inspiring work! Michael is an incredibly special teacher – talented, spirited, brilliant, insightful, generous, funny… the whole package.”
- Theresa Tova, Award winning Actress/Singer/Writer
“Thank you for the wonderful workshop. You helped me define, in a quick yet perceptive way, obstacles that block the stream of my creative process. Your workshop also helped us to become aware of our self image as actors and of physical habits which stand in our way. I felt the personal insights I had in the workshop concern not only my acting but also wider contexts in my life. Your guidance was encouraging, kind and humorous. I thank you heartily.”
- M. Scene Study Workshop, Tel Aviv University Dept. of Theatre
“You were very attentive, warm and patient. You made me very comfortable
to take chances and make strong choices. Your approach to the human and
individual aspect of acting was refreshing. It showed me that it’s
great to bring my personality to the role. I’ve been in some less
than helpful classes. Your class definitely wasn’t one of them.
Don’t change anything!”
- E. Dancy, SAG Conservatory Cold Reading Class
“You helped me be aware and gave me tools. I really appreciate
all that you did for me and for the Theatre Department of Tel Aviv University!”
-Evelin K., Scene Study Workshop

and I felt good about my performance.”
